This week I interviewed Monophonique, a name that has been featured on the blog a few times with their tracks. Monophonique are a duo based in Belgium, who recently released their first  EP on Kiez Beatz Records and already made a ton of remixes for other producers such as Haezer, The Mastertrons, The Foolish Legacy, Blaster, Dead CAT Bounce, Vakkuum and PANDAmic

1. Hello! How old is Monophonique?

Monophonique started out as a dj project about 2 years ago. We both started to listen to more electronic music and we loved the music so much that we started playing at some local parties. A few months later we started experimenting with Reason and Ableton, getting to know how everything works and trying to find our own sound. We started producing our own tracks about 10 months ago.

2. How are you lately? Are you working on something and how is this going?

Everything is going great, our first EP was released last month and a lot of our remixes are soon to be released on various labels. We did a lot of remixes last year but now we are going to focus on a second EP.

3. You grabbed our attention with your remix on Spiderbait’s “Black Betty”. Was this the first Metalectro track you ever did? How did you come up with the idea?

The first Metalelectro track we did was our remix of “Hellmarch”. The idea was to make a very dirty, pumped up remix of it. The same goes for Spiderbait, we wanted to make it a bit more danceable but still keep those fantastic guitars in it.

When most producers make an electro remix of a rock track they only use a small part of the guitars and add a dirty bassline , the idea of our metal remixes is to make a dirty bassline by sampling the guitars . This idea goes for all our remixes, we sample the original files as much as we can to make something new out of it, even if our remixes might not sound nothing like the original we always sample a lot of it.

4. What do Monophonique consider their biggest achievement/highlight so far?

Our biggest highlight was our first EP with all original tracks, but the best is yet to come.

5. “Inspired by…everyone and everything!” Can you mention a person or story that inspired you to write a song and which song is this?

All our songs are mainly inspired by artists like Proxy, Gtronic, Boys Noize, Polymorphic, Bloody Beetroots, etc…

When we start a song we usually think of a setting that goes with it , the whole “Protoss” EP is inspired by various movies and games such as Predator, Transformers and Starcraft. This makes it easier for us to give the song the right vibe and tone.

6. Do you prefer working only with computers/sequencers or do you get your hands dirty playing and recording instruments? Do you use samples and what’s your opinion on sampling and copyright?

We currently do everything with midi and computers but in the future we would love to get some analog synths and various instruments. We prefer working with real gear because it gives the best sound, but it’s just too expensive for the moment.

We try to make all the sounds ourselves, when we start working on a new song we have 5 to 10 synths just to make different bleeps and small sounds to fill up a track . Sometimes we do take samples from various sample packs if we can’t create the sound we want. But it’s always best to make everything from scratch.

Some producers just sample an old tune, put a beat and some fresh vocals under it and try to make money with it but the right way to do it is to take an old tune, chop the hell out of it and create a fresh new song (like Fake Blood did with “I Think I Like It”). When you do sample or remix a song we think it’s important to make something new with it and give it your own personal touch.

7. What are your influences/music background?

Our biggest influences are other electro producers but we take a lot of inspiration from other genres such as rock, metal, drum n bass, house, dubstep… Our musical background goes from Soulwax to Kyuss so we listen to a lot of different music.

8. Is Monophonique your main project or do you work on other projects too?

It’s currently our main project but in the future we would love to do a project with some self-recorded guitars, vocals and synths but still make it sound dirty.

9. Are you signed with any record label? Any future plans? (live shows, release, remix etc)

For the moment we prefer to work with independent labels, this way it’s easier to do and release what we want.

We have some upcoming gigs in different countries which we are really looking forward to and most of our remixes we did in 2010 still have to be released this year. But we always keep on producing and searching for good new tracks.

10. What are you listening to lately? Any tracks/artists you recommend?

“Cabala” and “Fuck The System” from Cyberpunkers are awesome tracks which we love to play, also Vakkuum’s “Nitro” remix of Autodidakt is pretty good. Drivepilot’s “Fuck Yeah” and Aerotronic’s “Sex & Cigarettes” Waxdolls remix is standard in our set. We are also a big fan of Polymorphic and Hey Today, both have created some amazing tunes last year.

11. What do you do when you are not working on music?

Medidate in our hyperbolic chamber while watching home & away.

12. What do you think about the Metalectro blog and the music featured on it?

It’s great, Metalelectro combines the best of 2 genres and there is so much more potential in the genre. I would love to see more rock bands combining hard beats and distorted guitars in the future.

13. Anything else you’d like to mention and we forgot to ask?

Thanks for the interview.

This week i interviewed Partysmartie, a name that has been featured on the blog a few times with their tracks. Partysmartie are a duo based in the USA and Austria, who recently released their free EP “All I Do Is Party”.

1. Hi Partysmartie, would you mind introducing yourselves?

Alfy twenty years in this fucked up world from the best city ever Los Angeles.

Matt 22 years from a small village near Vienna (Austria)

2. You’ve been rocking the Metalectro blog for a while now, how are you lately? Are you working on something and how is this going?

Yes working on our very first collaboration with the homie Blah Blah Blah and remixing a free track of the 80’s glam metal band Motley Crue and well, the other stuff we gotta keep a secret!

3. You grabbed our attention with your “All I Do Is Party” track. Was this the first Metalectro track you ever did? How did you come up with the idea?

I think it has to be our Night Prowler track. Our musical backround comes from the metal and punk scene so what we try to do is give you that vision of mosh pitting but motion of dance.

4. For your latest EP “All I do is party” you sampled 45 GRAVE’s “Partytime” from “The Return of the Living Dead” soundtrack. Tell us a few words about it…

Hahaha exactly!! One of my favorite movies and well, it was my sisters idea!

5. Did you try to get in touch with the band and play them the song or the remixes? If yes, what was their reaction?

Nope, we just sampled it!

6. Although Partysmartie is just 8 months old what would you say is your biggest achievement/highlight so far?

Let’s just say Partysmartie has become a raging monster!

7. Partysmartie is an overseas collaboration, how did this happen?

We had our own projects and we met on Soundcloud. We collaborated on an old

track called Chaos. We loved it and that’s when we gave birth to Partysmartie.

8. How does it work in terms of studio time?

Chating, sending samples back and forth, giving ideas, making our synth hard as fuck!

9. Do you prefer working only with computers/sequencers or do you get your hands dirty playing and recording instruments? Do you use samples and what’s your opinion on sampling and copyright?

We only use software-instruments… so yeah, no dirty hands…

If we sample something that is copyrighted we use it for our free tracks ’cause I think as long as you don’t make money with the work of others, sampling is ok.

10. Do you use analogue equipment or do you prefer keeping everything in the box?

Secret recipe!!!

11. What are your influences/music background? Have you ever played in a metal band?

Alfy: Well for me my biggest influences have to be Metallica and Motley Crue but even though i liked these bands i always had a thing for house music and electro until i came across the world of heavy electro and my life changed forever. I have never played in a band but i know how to play the drums.

Matt: I used to play in a Hardcore-Punk-Band for about 5 years but after we broke up I began to listen to house music and later electro. About 18 months ago I started producing my own tracks and after a while of making electro I felt the desire to create harder and more aggressive tracks. At this time I also started listening to more heavy electro.

12. So, what is music for you and what do you think about the way the music industry is changing? What do you think about popular/chart music?

All we have to say is Dubstep is the president right now but not for long…

13. Are you signed with any record label? Any future plans? (live shows, release, remix etc)

Shake Your Ass Records

We’ve been playing shows, but not together. Soon hopefully!

14. What are you listening to lately? Any tracks/artists you recommend?

KRFTKDS

SNAKE CHARMER

BLAH BLAH BLAH

THE WHOLE FACELESS CREW

And if you didn’t know, Faceless is the future!!! Be on the look out for Faceless!

15. What do you do when you are not working on music?

Working, school, you know life…

16. What do you think about the Metalectro blog and the music featured on it?

Sick, keep it up!

17. Something you’d like to mention and we forgot to ask?

Who is Mike Jones?

OWL VISION

This week we interviewed Owl Vision, or the Swedish Mean Machine as we like to call him. Owl Vision is a name that has been featured on the blog a few times with his tracks. He is based in Sweden and recently released a video teaser for his upcoming EP “The Black Death” which will be released on Dga Fäu Records on February the 14th and just today he saw his Noize Generation “Monster” remix is getting released on Beatport, featured in the self-titled “Monster EP”. So, since he’s been a very busy guy and extremely active producer with a few releases the past month and a few more coming next month, here is what he has to say about all this…

This week i interviewed Ossian Moncreiffe from KING MINOS, a name that has been featured on the blog a few times with their tracks. KING MINOS will shortly be releasing their “Royal Family” EP on Eyes Of House records.

01. Hi KING MINOS! Would you mind introducing yourselves?

KING MINOS is Ossian Moncreiffe (19) and Eion Gibbs(18), we’re a pair of Scottish teenagers.

02. So how old is KING MINOS?

We started working together about half a year ago, Eion plays the saxophone and i play computer games so the whole thing came together pretty smoothly.

03. You’ve been rocking the Metalectro blog for a while now. Are you working on something and how is this going?

Glad to hear we have been rocking the blog. We have been in the studio working on our new EP, it’s kinda house but with a heavy edge and some dubstep inspiration.

04. You grabbed our attention with your “Weight Lifter” track. Was this the first Metalectro track you ever did? How did you come up with the idea?

“Weight Lifter” was a nightmare to make, we reworked the intro about 100 times and we’re still not happy with it, but we really like the drop, and that’s what the tune was all about. We came up with “Weight Lifter” when high on energy drinks, the main idea being that we were going to make a strong track to intro a set with.

05. What would you say is your biggest achievement/highlight so far?

Playing at Rockness or maybe the Pendulum remix.

06. What are your influences/music backgrounds?

Eion sang in the school choir, until people realized where the noise was coming from. I don’t really have any band history, but i did learn the drums for a month. As for influences, we really have an electro background, the first dance band we really got into was Crystal Castles and then on to Justice and Boys Noize.

07. Have you ever played in a metal band?

Neither of us have played in a metal band cause we don’t suit the hair styles.

08. Do you prefer working only with computers/sequencers or do you get your hands dirty playing and recording instruments? Do you use samples and what’s your opinion on sampling and copyright?

We like unusual samples and we used to drop film sound-clips in our sets. I prefer the control of computers but for some sounds you really need to record and samplers can’t do everything. I like hearing sampling, we don’t really sample other people’s music but it’s cool when you hear someone use a sample cleverly, like Daft Punk using Barry Manilow’s “Who’s been sleeping in my bed” or Chiddy Bang using Mgmt’s “Kids.”

09. Do you use analogue equipment or do you prefer keeping everything in the box?

I like the box, because it’s safe and you always know how things will sound, however, you can get really nice and unexpected results through analogue gear, so i guess it’s really just a trade between precision and predictability.

10. So, what is music for you and what do you think about the way the music industry is changing? What do you think about popular/chart music?

Eion is a big fan of rock from the 60’s, so he’s pretty out of it. I like the way that mainstream has changed and music, like dubstep, has become popular. It bodes well for the stuff i produce. The music industry has changed drastically as a result of the internet. While it means that new bands get exposure that would not have been there before, there is no quality filter, so there is lots of rubbish floating around.

11. Are you signed with any record label? Any future plans? (live shows, release, remix etc)

We’re not signed to a label yet, just keeping our options open and trying to get the sound right before committing to a label. We don’t really get much of a chance to perform live because of other commitments but we will certainly be doing more shows later this year. We have one or two remix offers but we’re always looking for new track to put our spin on.

12. What are you listening to lately? Any tracks/artists you recommend?

Feed Me “Blood Red”, Digitalism “Magnets”, Hadouken “Mic Check”,

Flux Pavillion “Hold Me Close”, MSTRKRFT “Fist Of God”, Noisia “Stigma”

13. What is Arran Kraft and Sirian Bank?

Our side projects, both Eion and I make music independently of each other, and these are our aliases.

http://soundcloud.com/arran-kraft

14. What do you do when you are not working on music?

I’m studying at Exeter uni and Eion is still at school, so not very much really.

15. What do you think about the Metalectro blog and the music featured on it?

It’s a cool idea and we really like the blog because it stands out and does a good job of hunting down interesting music.

16. Anything else you’d like to mention and we forgot to ask?

Nahh, you covered all the bases.
